A timing game that costs honest validators 15%

A proposer who broadcasts late makes honest attesters vote for the wrong head. A distance-weighted reward is proposed to cut the loss to 4.71%.

A post on Ethereum Research from Yolodannn on 20 August sets out how the head vote can be gamed. A proposer holds its block until close to the attestation deadline; honest validators, seeing nothing new, attest to the parent; the delayed block then becomes canonical, and those attesters forfeit their head-vote reward. The author measures the resulting loss at 15.06% of total reward on average.

A second scenario is described alongside it. An adversary holding consecutive proposer slots privately extends a competing branch, and the reorganisation that follows strips rewards from votes cast on blocks that are subsequently removed.

The proposed fix is narrow on purpose

The suggestion is a distance-weighted head reward: an attestation pointing at a recent canonical ancestor earns a partial reward rather than nothing, while voting the freshest canonical head still earns the maximum. The author puts the loss under this scheme at 4.71%.

What it deliberately leaves alone matters as much. HLMD-GHOST and proposer boost are untouched — the change is to the reward calculation, not to fork choice, which keeps the blast radius small.

The asymmetry is the point rather than the percentage. A validator behaving correctly loses reward because someone else timed a broadcast, and the loss is persistent rather than occasional. Any reward rule that penalises honest behaviour for an adversary's choice is a slow incentive to stop behaving honestly.
